Prostate Radiation
Prostate radiation is a medical treatment for prostate cancer (cancer de prostata) with internal prostate radiation therapy (prostate cancer surgery) called brachytherapy, or external prostate radiation therapy. Prostate cancer is diagnosed by the urology specialists (urologist) with a prostate exam and prostate biopsies along with, chest x-rays, urine and blood specimens. Once the diagnosis and stage of prostate cancer has been established your medical options will be discussed. Fortunately several types of medical treatments are available. Prostate radiation has become a very successful singular prostate cancer treatment modality and also a very necessary adjunct treatment.
Prostate radiation both internal and external therapies have evolved into more refined and potent treatments to destroy the prostate cancer cells. External beam therapies include electron beam therapy, proton beam therapy and the newer neutron beam therapy. Internal prostate radiation therapies include using iodine-125 seeds, palladium-103, and cesium-131 seeds for low dose rate brachytherapy, and a lone iridium-194 seed for high dose rate brachytherapy.
Prostate surgeries to have the prostate removed, or the prostate frozen, are options that the urology specialist uses along with hormone treatments and a wait and see approach. Before we go into the details of prostate radiation treatments it is important to know what else is available should you choose not to use prostate radiation. Our international Urology Specialists Center uses every medical treatment for prostate cancer no matter how difficult or advanced your prostate cancer is. Our prostate surgery to remove the prostate called radical prostatectomy (prostatectomia) is performed with open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and with robotic prostate surgery. Dr. Fernando Bianco is the Chief of Robotic Surgery for the Columbia University Division of Urology at Mount Sinai Medical Center Miami Beach Florida. Dr. Bianco has performed hundreds of laparoscopic prostatectomy and da Vinci prostatectomy procedures. Da Vinci surgery is also used for kidney surgery (nefrectomia) to remove renal cell carcinoma (cancer rinon), and bladder surgery for cancer bladder (cancer vejiga) removal.
Our prostate cancer approach includes prostate cryosurgery (freezing the prostate cancer). Dr. Edward Gheiler the founder of Urology Specialists has expanded our center to include prostate enlargement surgery using the “enlarged prostate button TURP”, the green light laser, and the traditional TURP. His mission was to create a large comprehensive world class urology center and his mission is now being completed with the opening of the natural medicine holistic (remedio natural) urology center. Dr. Gheiler has specialized in both urologic surgery for urinary retention and stress incontinence (incontinencia urinaria) such as prolapse surgery and erectile dysfunction causes (problemas ereccion) that need penis surgery (cirugia pene) for a penis implant. As one of the world’s best penile surgery specialists for the installation of a penile prosthesis for impotence causes (impotencia masculina) he has men coming from around the world for his expert and confidential care. Our urologic surgeons also perform, diagnose, and treat testicular cancer symptoms (cancer testiculo), vasectomy procedures, and kidney stones treatment (calculos renales).
Prostate radiation is one of the steps on the road to recovery which may include adjunct treatments and follow up visits to determine if the prostate cancer treatment has succeeded. After your prostate radiation treatments it is not unusual for urinary symptoms or bladder symptoms to occur such as gross hematuria (sangre orina) or microscopic hematuria.
